Fire CERT Meeting Overview‚Äč5-2-18

We went over what the Fire Rehab does and why it is important we are able to set up so quickly.  Chief Bill Gillespie spoke to us for a few minutes on the importance as well.  I (Ann) introduced all of the instructors as well as the people who have been with the Fire rehab since it started.  We talked about all of the different jobs that we have in the rehab.  We stressed the importance of scene safety and how you always do things as buddies.  After we finished talking in the classroom we took them all outside and showed them what the rehab looks like.  We talked about the different things in the rehab and that we keep in the truck.  Everyone was allowed to ask question and make comments.  Once we were done everyone helped us clean up the rehab and put everything back in the truck.

Cindy spoke with Debra about the requirements to become a Fire CERT member and this is what she said.

1. CERT class first
2. 4 Fire CERT Rehab meetings
3. To be shadowed at 2 events

The next First Responder class is scheduled to start May 22, 2018.  It will be a Tuesday and Thursdays and a couple of Sundays.  If you are interested please text or email Cindy.

CERT Monthly Training   4/23/2018            1800-2000

We called the meeting to order and introduced Bill Gillespie as the Interim Fire Chief for Crescent City Fire and Rescue.   He told the group about his experience in the fire service and how he got involved.

Cindy told Bill about DN CERT and the history of how it started.

Office of Emergency Services top 3 is Jay Sarina, 2nd is Neal Lopez and 3rd is Cindy Henderson.   For the Emergency Operations Center it is 1st Cindy Henderson and 2nd is Debra Wakefield.  Cindy talked about how most positions are three deep and that Ann Weiland will be stepping up as the second until Debra Wakefield returns.

All the call outs for OES and CERT go through dispatch.

CERT people must NEVER self-deploy.  They must be requested for an emergency.

We talked about how we could get more people back into the monthly meetings.  Lori Poole was put in charge of coming up with a radio announcement reminding people about the monthly CERT meetings.  Cindy will contact the radio about setting it up.  We also talked about getting together to do a phone tree to find out who is still interested in the monthly meetings.  Ann mentioned that Pete Craig offered to help with this.

May 2nd will be the Fire CERT Rehab meeting from 6-8 at the Washington Fire Station.  We will be doing a show and tell on what they do.  We will be having the Fire CERT Rehab meetings the first Wednesday of every month.

May 16th is our next Monthly CERT training from 6-8 at the Washington Fire Station.  We will be having all of our monthly trainings on the 3rd Wednesday of every month.  On the 16th we will be setting up the Volunteer Reception Center doing a training and exercise.

We are going to send out 2 notifications about the Monthly CERT meetings.  The first will be about a week before and the 2nd will be the morning of the meeting.

Our next CERT class will be held in October.  The instructors will be meeting to figure out dates.  As soon as we get them we will let you know.

OES CERT is also an option for those who do not want to do Fire CERT but would like to be active.  You can let Cindy know if this is something you would like to do.  Part of what you would be doing is working in the Emergency Operations Center helping answer hotline phones, being a runner, or helping with being a scribe.  There are many other things that you can help with if you so choose.  You are invited to come to the EOC meeting on June 7th from 2-4pm.

Area Ops and EOC rotate every other first Thursday of the month from 2-4 at Washington Fire Station.

Sign in sheets are very important.  We can use these hours for in kind matches for some of the grants that we get.

It is time to put in wish lists for next year some of the things we talked about was Comm T classes, ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800. More personalized vests with things such as traffic control and different jobs on them.  Also, a couple of magnetic boards to put into the Fire Rehab Truck.

At the end of the meeting we did a round table and Bill said that he is excited to work with everyone and to see how well we all work together.  Others talked about some of the training classes they would like to have and one said that she would like to see if we could work some with the Brookings CERT group.

We adjourned and reminded people that the next CERT meeting is May 16th from 6-8 pm at the Washington Fire Station.
